Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:25 am, the temperature is 38 degrees.
This will be another beautiful day, with sunny skies and a high temperature in the low to middle 70’s, falling to the middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be almost identical. There is a chance for rain Tuesday afternoon and a greater chance Tuesday night. I hope that happens.
Little River is flowing at 43.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 78 cfs. The water temperature is 48.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are chilly this morning, but the streams will warm later and fishing will improve. Trout are hiding in the broken water or near cover.
Traffic is heavy in the Park, so you may want to choose a low to middle elevation smaller stream to fish today. Nymphs will probably work best. A dry and dropper rig is a good choice. Dress to blend with the forest, use light tippet and smaller flies. You may need to cast further than normal due to the low water conditions to avoid being seen by the trout.
Fishing in the stocked streams for trout is probably good. The fish will be holding in the deeper pools. Small nymphs are a good fly choice. You may want to use a strike indicator.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is fair at best. Try drifting nymphs through the deeper pools. Streamers may work for you. Hellgrammite patterns or crayfish imitations are a good choice.
Lake fishing will be best early or late due to the bright sunny conditions. Winds will be calm today. Weighted streamers fished deep and slow would be my choice. Swimming nymphs may work too.
If you are hoping to fish on a tailwater today, visit the TVA website to see what you have to work with today. There are some opportunities if you plan carefully. You may need to go early to fish some tailwaters. Check the schedule at South Holston and Norris dams.
We are busy at the shop. I work upstairs in the fly tying department and we did well there. Fly tyers are gearing up for the fly tying season.
Dave Carson added two more fly tyers to our Fall and early Winter Free Fly Tying Demonstrations. Jimmy Jones and Walter Babb will be tying in early December. You can see the dates below. After the new year, we will be holding more free fly tying demonstrations on Saturdays. I think many of those will have two fly tyers demonstrating on the same day.
Have a great and beautiful Sunday and thank you for being here with us.
