Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 39 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the middle to upper 70’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be warm again like today, but with clouds increasing through the day. Showers are likely tomorrow night. The low temperature will be in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 43.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the mountains are still flowing very low. The streams are warming which will improve fishing. Most trout are hiding in the broken water or near cover.
Stealth is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest and stay low if possible. Use light tippet and smaller than usual flies. You may need to make longer than usual casts. A dry and dropper rig is a good choice.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains is fair. The trout will be holding in the deep pools. Small nymphs will likely work best for you. Use light tippet and possibly a strike indicator.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is fair. Fishing will be best later in the day after the water warms. Nymphs, hellgrammite patterns and crayfish imitations are good fly choices. Fish in the deep pools or runs.
This will be a beautiful lake fishing day. Winds will be calm. It’s chilly, but I would still go early and cast large weighted streamers to the banks and cover. I would use a large Wooly Bugger or a threadfin shad pattern. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish.
There will be long breaks in the generation at several dams today. Norris Dam is not one of them. Visit the TVA website from the links below to find a suitable generation schedule at a tailwater you are familiar with.
Yesterday was my day off this week and it was a beautiful day. Trees are shedding leaves quickly though there is still some Fall color left in the foothills. We are finally getting a view of the mountains surrounding Cades Cove from our house, now that the leaves are falling. The view will improve and last through the Winter.
Acorns are plentiful and huge this year. That is good news for the wildlife. We have not seen a bear at our house in a while. When Winter sets in, we will start feeding birds again. We do bring the feeders in at night, when bears may be roaming around even during the cold months.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
