Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:42 am, the temperature is 48 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the low 70’s. We have a chance for showers today. Rain is likely tonight, with a low temperature in the low 50’s. Showers are likely again tomorrow morning. There is no indication of heavy rain during the period.
Little River is flowing at 43.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 99 cfs. The water temperature is 51.8 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. Normal is low in late October. Most trout are hiding in the broken water. You may see brown trout out in the open in pools, preparing to spawn or spawning.
Due to the low water conditions, light tippet and smaller flies are recommended. A dry fly with a weighted nymph dropper is a good combination to use. You may want to cast further than normal so you will not be seen by the trout. Wear muted clothing that blends with the forest.
I talked to a couple of customers who did well fishing in the Smokies yesterday. They told me there were not many anglers fishing, though the Park is crowded. We were slow at the shop yesterday which indicates less fishermen were on the water.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the Smokies is fair. The water is very low so the trout are packed into the deeper pools and runs. I would use a small weighted nymph or tandem rig suspended below a strike indicator. Vary the distance between your nymphs and the indicator as needed. Use light tippet.
Fishing for smallmouth bass is fair in the lowland rivers. Nymphs, hellgrammite patterns, crayfish imitations and possibly streamers should work for you. Fish in the deep pools and runs.
This should be a fair to good lake fishing day due mostly to the overcast conditions. Winds will be calm this morning increasing to 5 miles per hour this afternoon. Cast to the banks or cover using weighted streamers. Allow your flies to slink deep and retrieve slowly.
There are some tailwater fishing opportunities today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see the options available to you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
