Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 59 degrees.
Light rain moved into the region late yesterday. Amounts in Townsend have amounted to about a quarter of an inch. The Knoxville Airport is reporting .38 inches fell there.
Light rainfall is likely today. The high temperature will be in the upper 60’s falling to the low 50’s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 60’s and a low in the upper 40’s. The balance of this week will be warm and dry after today.
Little River is flowing at 46.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 99 cfs. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees this morning. The river is slowly rising.
Steams in the mountains are flowing low but rising slightly. Hopefully, they will rise further today. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range.
This will likely be a good day to be fishing in the mountains. A dry fly with a small nymph dropper is a good tactic. Use light tippet and cast further than normal. Most trout will be found in the broken water or near cover. You may see brown trout out in the open, in pools, preparing to spawn or spawning. If you see trout on a redd, it is best to leave them alone to reproduce.
Due to the low water conditions, stocked trout in the streams flowing out of the mountains will be holding in deeper pools and runs. Nymph rigs made using light tippet and small nymphs is a good tactical choice. A strike indicator may help suspend the flies where the trout are holding. Get a good drift and adjust your indicator as necessary. You may also want to try “high sticking” or Euro Nymphing without a strike indicator. You might do well with streamers.
Water temperatures in the lowland rivers are within the smallmouth bass’ activity range. Nymphs, hellgrammite patterns, crayfish imitations and possibly streamers will work. It should be overcast all day which is a good condition. Fish in the deeper pools.
If you plan to fly fish on a lake today, weighted streamers will likely work best. Allow your flies to sink as they are retrieved slowly into deeper water. A good tactic is to pause your retrieve occasionally. As your fly sinks during the pause, it might trigger a strike. Winds are predicted to be calm to 5 miles per hour. It should be overcast today which is beneficial.
TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at some dams but there are planned pauses at others. You can work with the schedules on some tailwaters. Visit the TVA website to carefully plan your tailwater fishing day.
According to the long term weather forecast, we will enjoy a warm early November. Water temperatures should remain favorable for anglers over the next two weeks. I can hear rain falling right now. I hope it rains all day.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Mike Adams will be tying on Saturday November 5th. Mike is a retired fly fishing guide who lives in upper East Tennessee. He is an excellent fly tyer who has come up with some unique trout patterns to share with you. When Mike demonstrates at the shop, we always have a big crowd.
Bill Boyd will be tying on Saturday November 12th, with his granddaughter “Half Hitch”. Bill lives in Dayton Tennessee. Mike Bone will be tying on Saturday November 19th. Mike has been guiding, mostly on the Clinch River and Holston River trout tailwaters for decades. He is also an accomplished smallmouth bass guide. Everyone likes Mike. You will too. CLICK HERE to visit Mike’s website.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Walter Babb will be demonstrating his unbelievable fly tying skills. Many of you know Walter. Most people in the southeast have at least heard of him. Walter is a legend. He loves tying Catskills trout patterns. He is also a well known bamboo rod maker. Walter tells good funny stories. This demonstration will be well attended.
