Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 51 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 60’s with a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high near 70 degrees. No rain is predicted through the end of the week. High temperatures will rise into the 70’s Thursday through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 124 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 95 cfs. The water temperature is 57.2 degrees this morning.
Rainfall in the mountains caused most streams to rise yesterday. Some streams are flowing higher than normal this morning while others are flowing at about normal. Normal in early November is low.
Water temperatures are well within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations.
Fishing conditions in the mountains are good today. Trout will be taking nymphs for sure and possibly dry flies. Try a dry fly with a weighted nymph dropper. Or, use a weighted tandem nymph rig. Most trout will be hiding in the broken water. You may see brown trout out in the open in pools, spawning or preparing to spawn.
Fishing for stocked trout in the streams flowing out of the mountains has improved due to slightly higher water and warmer water temperatures. Weighted nymphs will probably work best.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers has probably improved as well. Many rivers are flowing higher. Bass should be more active due to the warmer water temperatures. Nymphs, hellgrammite patterns, crayfish imitations and streamers are good fly choices. Fish in the deeper pools and runs.
Fly fishing on the lakes will be best early or late. Winds will be calm this morning with a slight breeze expected this afternoon. Cast to the banks and cover with weighted streamers. A Wooly Bugger or baitfish pattern are both good fly choices. Let them sink deep, retrieve slowly and pause your retrieve at times.
TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at a several of their dams. There are exceptions. Check the generation schedule at South Holston and Wilbur dams.
Two sections on the South Holston tailwater are closed to fishing due to the brown trout spawn. The closing dates are November 1 through February 1. Learn more by visiting the Taylor Joyce Fly Fishing website by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
