Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 53 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 70’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 70’s and a low in the low 50’s. Saturday and Sunday will be warm with a low chance for showers.
Little River is flowing at 62.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.37 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 56.3 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations. The fish are actively feeding. Most trout will be holding in the broken water or near cover. You may see brown trout out in the open, either spawning or preparing to spawn.
I believe the best tactic is to use a dry fly with a weighted nymph dropper. I would use a small bead head nymph and light tippet.
Dress to blend with the forest and make longer than usual casts to avoid being seen by the trout.
Fishing for trout that are stocked in the free flowing lower elevation rivers is fair to good. The trout will be holding in deeper pools and runs. A small nymph or midge pupa will probably work best. I would use a strike indicator that can easily be adjusted up or down, suspending your nymph or tandem nymph rig.
Water temperatures are good in the lowland rivers. Fishing for smallmouth bass is fair only because of the low water and limited areas to fish. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Nymphs and streamers will probably work best for you.
Fishing on the lakes will be best early or late when the sun is low. Cast to the banks or cover with streamers. Good fly choices are weighted Wooly Buggers or threadfin shad imitations. Fish deep and slow with pauses during your retrieve. Winds will be calm to 5 miles per hour today and blowing from the east. I have always heard an east wind is not a good fishing condition. I’m not sure why or if it is true.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams but not so much at others. Tailwater anglers do have some choices today but may have to travel to find suitable flows for wade fishing. If you ae boating, you will have more options. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
