Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 68 degrees.
The temperature outside stated above is not a typo. I checked two different local personal weather stations and averaged the two. It is really that warm out there this morning.
It is going to be warm today, with a high temperature close to 80 degrees. It will be mostly cloudy today and windy this afternoon. We have a chance for showers tonight with a low temperature in the upper 50’s. Tomorrow will be warm again, in the upper 70’s with a chance for showers.
Little River is flowing at 55.3 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 135 cfs. The water temperature is 56.3 degrees at the low elevation USGS site near Townsend.
Streams and rivers throughout the region are flowing low. Water temperatures are warm, well within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations. Trout are actively feeding in the mountains due to the ideal water temperatures.
Most trout are hiding in broken water or near cover. Brown trout are preparing to spawn or spawning out in the open in pools. Dry flies, nymphs, or a dry and dropper rig are all good choices under these conditions. Stay hidden from the trout. Use fine tippet and smaller flies. You may need to make longer casts to avoid detection.
Stocked trout in the rivers are holding in deep water and searching for food. Small weighted nymphs are a good fly choice. Use light tippet. Get your nymphs down to where you see trout competing for food.
Smallmouth bass will be found cruising in the deep pools in the lowland rivers. They will be active due to the warmer water temperatures. Nymphs or streamers will likely work best for you. Try hellgrammite patterns or crayfish imitations. A small foam floating fly could get their attention. It seems late for topwater action, but the weather conditions are not normal right now.
There are breaks in the generation at several dams today, offering tailwater wade fishing anglers some opportunities. You might need to go early on some rivers and choose the right area to fish until the water comes up. If you are boating, you have more options. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what those options are.
This is not going to be a good lake fishing day according to the weather forecasts I read this morning. The forecast on the National Weather Service website predicts “Breezy, with a northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south 15 to 20 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph”.
This is going to be a great day to visit the shop. Mike Adams, a well-known retired fly fishing guide will be demonstrating his fly tying skills and showing you his favorite fly patterns between 10 am and 2 pm. Mike guided clients from drift boats on tailwaters in Tennessee. He is an excellent fly tyer and a fun person to talk to. This is a free event. All you have to do is show up.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Mike Adams will be tying on Saturday November 5th. Mike is a retired fly fishing guide who lives in upper East Tennessee. He is an excellent fly tyer who has come up with some unique trout patterns to share with you. When Mike demonstrates at the shop, we always have a big crowd.
Bill Boyd will be tying on Saturday November 12th, with his granddaughter “Half Hitch”. Bill lives in Dayton Tennessee. Mike Bone will be tying on Saturday November 19th. Mike has been guiding, mostly on the Clinch River and Holston River trout tailwaters for decades. He is also an accomplished smallmouth bass guide. Everyone likes Mike. You will too. CLICK HERE to visit Mike’s website.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Walter Babb will be demonstrating his unbelievable fly tying skills. Many of you know Walter. Most people in the southeast have at least heard of him. Walter is a legend. He loves tying Catskills trout patterns. He is also a well known bamboo rod maker. Walter tells good funny stories. This demonstration will be well attended.
