Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
Cooler air has moved into the area. It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 70’s dropping to the low 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 70’s. Rain will begin falling tomorrow night and last through Friday. There is the potential for heavy rain. The chance for rain is 100% Friday.
It is going to be much cooler this weekend with temperatures falling into the 20’s each night.
Little River is flowing at 64.3 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.38 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature is 56.8 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations. Trout are actively feeding. Most anglers I have talked to are doing best using nymphs. Stealth is essential to your success. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more. Use light tippet and smaller nymphs. You may need to cast further than normal to avoid detection.
Trout in the stocked sections of the lowland rivers are holding in deep pools and runs. Water temperatures are very favorable. Nymphs will likely work best for you.
I drove along lower Little River yesterday on my way to Maryville for a dentist appointment. Some sections looked good for smallmouth bass fishing. Actually, the river looked better than I thought it would, in some areas. Other lowland rivers may appear different.
Water temperatures are warm enough for smallmouth bass feeding activity. Nymphs and streamers are your best choices right now. Fish the deeper pools or where runs enter a pool.
Lake fishing today will be best early or late when the sun is low. Winds are predicted to be light and variable. Cast to the banks with weighted streamers, fished deep, slow and with intermittent pauses for bass and other species.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at several dams. At others, they will begin generating this morning so it is possible to wade fish for a while on the tailwaters below. Visit the TVA website to determine if your favorite tailwater is fishable for wading and when. If you are boating, there are more options.
Most of Florida is under either a hurricane warning, a tropical storm warning or a tropical storm watch. Tropical storm Nicole will make landfall in Florida by tomorrow. The storm is predicted to move north through many southern states including the Appalachians, arriving here Friday.
To our friends in Florida and other southern states, please be safe.
Thank you for being here with us.
