Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 60 degrees.
Today will be wet and windy with a high temperature in the middle 60’s in the foothills. Rainfall up to one inch is possible. The forecast in the mountains is different. For instance, the forecast at Newfound Gap calls for strong winds up to 35 miles per hour and heavy rain, with two to three inches possible.
We have a chance for more rain tomorrow with a high temperature in the low 50’s dropping to the low to middle 20’s overnight. Sunday will be mostly sunny, with a high only reaching the middle 30’s and dropping to the low to middle 20’s overnight. Snow is possible in the high elevations tomorrow afternoon and evening.
Little River is currently flowing at 53.5 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.32 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs.
Most streams on the west side of the Smokies are flowing low this morning. There are some exceptions to the east. Davidson River and Cataloochee Creek are rising. There is a high chance all streams will rise today. Some may rise very high and quickly.
There is also a wind advisory in the mountains today.
If you go fishing in the Smokies, watch for quickly rising water. Frankly, this is probably not a good day to be fishing in the mountains due to the expected wind and rain. If you go, nymphs will probably work best.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low. That may change later today. Fishing for stocked trout and smallmouth bass could be fair to good. I would go early. Weighted nymphs and streamers will work best for stocked trout, smallmouth bass or rock bass.
This is also not a good lake fishing day mainly because of the chance for strong winds.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating, sluicing or spilling at most dams today.
This is going to be an interesting weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing the stream flows and water temperatures tomorrow morning.
Bill Boyd Jr and his granddaughter will be tying flies at the shop tomorrow between 10 am and 2 pm. This is a free demonstration. All you have to do is show up. You will have a great time and learn from watching and talking to them. I hope to see you there.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
