Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:34 am, the temperature is 57 degrees.
It rained most of the day yesterday. Weather stations in the area reported less than an inch of rain. We got .83 inches in Townsend. The rain yesterday was a blessing. Much of Tennessee and areas in some states are considered to be in a moderate drought or worse. When the US Drought Monitor is updated Thursday, it will look different in the Southeast.
We can expect more rain showers today with a high temperature of 55 degrees and a low tonight in the middle to upper 20’s. Light snow showers are possible tonight, especially in the high elevations. It will be sunny and cold tomorrow with a high in the low 40’s dropping to the middle to low 20’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 371 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.39 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 154 cfs. The river is receding. The water temperature is 57.7 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing much higher than normal. With more rain predicted today, we may see some streams rise again. Heavy rain is not predicted. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low to middle elevations this morning.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, be careful wading. Stand in safe water. I think this is a great opportunity to fish with weighted nymph rigs, “high sticking” or Euro nymphing. You might try streamers too.
The lowland rivers are flowing high today. Fishing for stocked trout may be good in some rivers, depending on the flow. Stand in safe water and cast weighted nymph rigs or streamers. You might do really well.
This is going to be a nasty day to be on the lakes in a boat, canoe or kayak. Temperatures will be falling later today. It may be breezy this afternoon. If you go, cast to the banks or cover with weighted streamers. Allow your fly to sink deep and retrieve slowly with intermittent pauses. Vary your retrieve.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating most of the day at some dams and all day at others. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have, where to go and when.
We will be holding a Free Fly Tying Demonstration at the shop today, between 10 am and 2 pm. The featured tyers are Bill Boyd Jr. and his granddaughter “Half Hitch”. This will be a fun day and you will see some excellent fly tying skills demonstrated. You don’t need a reservation. Just show up.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Bill Boyd will be tying on Saturday November 12th, with his granddaughter “Half Hitch”. Bill lives in Dayton Tennessee. Mike Bone will be tying on Saturday November 19th. Mike has been guiding, mostly on the Clinch River and Holston River trout tailwaters for decades. He is also an accomplished smallmouth bass guide. Everyone likes Mike. You will too. CLICK HERE to visit Mike’s website.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - To be announced. Watler Babb was scheduled to tie today but he had to cancel due to a personal conflict. He is scheduled to tie next year.
