Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:19 am, the temperature is 33 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature around 40 degrees dropping to the middle 20’s tonight. Monday will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s. Rain will move into the area Monday night and remain through Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 176 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 141 cfs. The water temperature is 50.7 degrees this morning and falling.
Streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are falling this morning. If you go fishing in the Smokies today, you may want to wait a while for the water temperatures to bottom out. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best. If you see a hatch, and trout feeding on the insects, switch to a dry fly. I think you will probably see blue wing olives or midges on the surface, if you see them at all. Flows are at a good level to use Euro-style or high sticking techniques.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers should be good today though it might be best to fish later when the water has begun to warm, if it does. Weighted nymph rigs or streamers will probably work best for you. If the trout are refusing your nymphs, downsize them to midge pupa or other small nymphs. You might want to try squirmy worms too.
Smallmouth bass fishing in the lowland rivers may be slower today due to the cool water temperatures. Try nymphs or streamers. Fishing might be fine. Flows are good in most lowland rivers today.
This may be a decent lake fly fishing day due to the overcast conditions. Winds are predicted to be out of the north at 5 miles per hour. Cast to the banks or cover with weighted streamers, retrieved deep, slow and with intermittent pauses.
TVA and the Corps will be generating, spilling or sluicing pretty much all day at most dams in the region. There are some exceptions so check the TVA website from the links below to see what they are. You may be able to work in some tailwater fishing time today.
Bill Boyd Jr and his granddaughter tied flies at the shop yesterday for our Free Fly Tying Demonstration event we hold on Saturdays during the cold months. Their demonstration was well attended and we were busy at the shop. Fly tying season has begun. We are seeing a lot of tyers in the shop and buying online.
Guide Mike Bone will be tying this coming Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. You don’t want to miss that one. Our fly tying demonstrations are free. Just show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
