Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 36 degrees.
We have a 90% chance for rain today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 40’s and a low tonight in the low 30’s. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch are possible today. Rain is likely tonight.
It will be mostly cloudy tomorrow with a high in the low to middle 40’s dropping to the low to middle 20’s overnight. Thursday will be sunny with a high around 40 degrees and a low in the low 20’s.
The higher elevations in the mountains are under a wind advisory today. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are possible at Newfound Gap.
Little River is flowing at 109 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 143 cfs. The water temperature is 43.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing slightly below median flow. That will likely change today due to the expected rain. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range, in the low 40’s at the low to middle elevations.
Your best option right now is to fish in the low elevations with weighted nymph rigs. Trout will not be very active, except for possibly post spawn brown trout.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations is probably going to be fair today. Weighted nymphs will probably work best. If your nymphs are not working, try downsizing to midge pupa or other small nymphs.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass may be slow today due to the cold water temperatures. If you go, try nymphs or streamers.
If you want to try your luck fishing on a lake, cast to the banks and cover with heavily weighted streamers. Retrieve slowly with intermittent pauses to keep your streamers deep. I have not talked to any anglers who are fly fishing on the lakes and doing well. Mike and Bill fished on a nearby lake last week and only caught two smallmouth bass.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have. You may have more if you are boating.
The long term weather forecast indicates we are in for a cold week, with highs in the 40’s and lows in the 20’s. A low temperature in the teens is predicted for Sunday night.
Traffic has been very light in Townsend so far this week. We have been slow at the shop.
Guide Mike Bone will be demonstrating fly tying and talking about fly fishing at the shop Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. The demonstration is free. Just show up. You don’t want to miss this one. Mike has been guiding on the tailwaters in the area longer than anyone I can think of. He is a pro. Mike is a great guy to spend the day with.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
