Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 31 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature around 40 degrees and a low tonight in the low 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 40’s dropping to the middle 20’s. We are going to see plenty of sunshine every day through the weekend with highs in the low to middle 40’s and lows in the low 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 215 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 147 cfs. The water temperature is 43.5 degrees this morning and falling.
Streams in the mountains are flowing at normal or slightly higher than normal today. Water temperatures are falling and they are currently below the trout’s preferred range at all elevations. Most trout will be sluggish. Post spawn brown trout may be active.
Nymphs will probably work best if they work at all. Wait and go fishing later after the water temperatures bottom out for the day. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout may be fair in the rivers flowing out of the mountains. Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best.
Fishing in the lowland rivers for smallmouth bass will be slow due to the cold water conditions. The fish will be sluggish and not likely to chase streamers. Nymph drifted in the current will probably work better than streamers under these conditions. If the nymphs are not working, switch to streamers.
There are pauses in the generation planned at several dams today, mostly in the afternoon. If you hope to fish on a tailwater, refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what opportunities you have. I look at these schedules every day and what I am seeing now is unusual.
Traffic is very light in Townsend. We have been slow at the shop this month. For the first two weeks of the month, it was slower last year.
Remember, Mike Bone will be conducting a fly tying demonstration Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. This demonstration is free. Just show up. Mike has been guiding in East Tennessee for decades, mostly on the Clinch and Holston rivers. He has a wealth of knowledge he is willing to share. I expect this demonstration to be well attended.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Mike Bone will be tying on Saturday November 19th. Mike has been guiding, mostly on the Clinch River and Holston River trout tailwaters for decades. He is also an accomplished smallmouth bass guide. Everyone likes Mike. You will too. CLICK HERE to visit Mike’s website.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
