Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 21 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 40’s, dropping to the low 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be almost exactly like today. Sunday will be sunny with a high around 40 degrees and a low in the low 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.84 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature is 39.4 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are in the 30’s this morning and continuing to fall. That is way below the trout’s preferred range. Most trout will be sluggish. Their metabolism has slowed. They don’t require food. They will not be expending energy chasing your flies. Brown trout might be more active.
If you go today, don’t fall in. You should have a dry change of clothing in your truck in case you do. I would not venture too far from my fishing vehicle. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs are your best fly choices. Use light tippet.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers is probably going to be slow. Drift weighted nymph rigs through areas where the stocked trout are holding. The water is very clear. Cold water loses the ability to hold dissolved solids. Use light tippet and small nymphs.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass in the lowland rivers will be slow today. The bass will be inactive due to the cold water temperatures.
There will be some pauses in the generation at a few dams today. Tailwater anglers have some choices, especially later today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
We transitioned from a warm Fall to Winter quickly. It will be warmer next week, about 10 degrees warmer, day and night. The chance for rain is greater later next week.
This will be a good fly tying weekend. The weather conditions are perfect.
