Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 27 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high temperature in the low 60’s, dropping to the high 30’s tonight. Thanksgiving day will be mostly sunny with a high in the low to middle 60’s and an overnight low in the middle 40’s.
Rain will move into the area tomorrow night, and remain through Saturday. The chance for rain is high each day. It will be warm through the period.
Little River is flowing at 93.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 185 cfs. The water temperature is 38.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal for this date and that will continue through tomorrow. Rainfall later this week should improve the lower than normal water conditions. The streams are cold this morning, with water temperatures being lower than the trout’s preferred range.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait until later when the water is warmer. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best. Stay hidden from the trout by dressing in muted colors. Use fine tippet. Fish the broken choppy water and deep runs.
Fishing for stocked trout will be slow this morning but improve as the streams warm over the next few days. Weighted nymphs are good fly choices. Smaller nymphs may work best for you.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains is probably going to be slow. If you go, try nymphs or streamers.
There are breaks in the generation planned at a few dams today, mostly in the afternoon. Check the schedules at Norris, Cherokee and Center Hill dams on the TVA website. There may be others.
We are seeing visitors at the shop who are here for the Thanksgiving holiday and there will be more arriving today.
The shop will be closed tomorrow but we will re-open Friday morning. Of course, we will be open Saturday and Sunday.
We are not holding a free fly tying demonstration Saturday but we will on December 3rd featuring Jimmy Jones.
I will not be writing a fishing report tomorrow. I’m sleeping in.
Have a great day and a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thank you for being here with us.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
