Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 46 degrees.
Light rain is falling in Townsend this morning. There is a chance for rain this morning with a high temperature in the upper 50’s, dropping to the middle 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the middle to upper 40’s. No rain is expected Saturday. Rain will move in Saturday night and remain through Sunday morning. The high Sunday will be in the middle 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 85.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 185 cfs. The water temperature is 43.7 degrees and rising.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing below median flow. The streams are slowly warming, but not to within the trout’s preferred range yet. We will see water temperatures rise over the next few days. Fishing will improve.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, start with weighted nymph rigs. There is a chance you will see aquatic insects on the surface today and though the weekend. You may see blue wing olives or other species. If trout are feeding on the surface, switch to a dry fly or an emerger that mimics what you are seeing on the water.
Fishing for stocked trout will improve as the streams warm. Weighted nymphs will probably work best. Try small nymphs, egg patterns or squirmy worms.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass in the lowland rivers will probably be slow. If you go, try nymphs and streamers. As water temperatures rise, fishing will improve somewhat.
There are breaks in the generation planned at some dams today. Some flows may be suitable at times for wading and boating in the tailwaters. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
I suspect we will be busy at the shop today and through the weekend. There are many online orders that were placed yesterday. Everyone working in the shop will be scrambling, filling orders and shipping them out.
Our LRO Grand Slam Smokies Fly Box Selection is selling fast, mostly online. You can see these fly boxes loaded with flies by CLICKING HERE. They are boxed for gift giving. Shipping is free. Get them while they last.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
