Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:48 am, the temperature is 65 degrees.
Today will be partly cloudy with rain early, then clearing this afternoon. The high today will be what it is now with a low tonight in the low 40’s. There is a slight chance for rain tonight. It may be windy today, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour in the foothills.
The mountains are under a high wind warning today, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Heavy rain is predicted at Newfound Gap and Mount LeConte and at other higher elevation locations.
Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, dropping to the upper 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 78.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.46 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 188 cfs. The water temperature is 48.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing below median flow, at least for now. Davidson River is rising. If we get the predicted heavy rain in the mountains, some streams may rise quickly this morning. Check the USGS stream gauges before you go.
It is windy now, and strong winds are predicted in the mountains.
This is probably not an ideal day to go fishing in the Smokies. If you go, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers may be good today, barring high or stained water. Weighted nymph rigs or streamers are good choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers could be fair today. Some rivers may be stained later. Try nymphs or streamers.
There are a few generation schedules that tailwater anglers may be able to work with today with careful planning. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
I wrote in yesterday’s report, that Dave Whitlock passed away on Thanksgiving. The fly fishing world lost an icon. You can read more about Dave’s passing with words from his wife Emily by visiting the Fly Fisherman Magazine tribute. CLICK HERE. Dave was an extremely talented artist, fly tyer, author and fly fisherman. He was a very nice man.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
