Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 50 degrees.
Today will be cloudy early then clearing later with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to the middle 30’s tonight. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the upper 40’s tomorrow night. Rain will move in tomorrow night and last through Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 231 cfs. The water temperature is 50.5 degrees this morning.
Rain fell in the mountains yesterday and overnight. Water levels rose and they are receding. Streams are still flowing below normal for this date. Water temperatures have warmed to within the trout’s preferred range in the low elevations.
If you go fishing today, weighted nymphs will likely work best for you. You may notice adult aquatic insects on the surface. They could be blue wing olives or other active Winter insects. If trout are feeding on them, switch to dry flies or emergers that mimic the insects you see.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers will be fair to good today. Right now, the water is warm enough for heightened trout feeding activity. Small weighted nymphs fished under an indicator or without one would be my first choice. Use light tippet. Small nymphs might work best.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers could be fair today. Nymphs or streamers are good fly choices.
There are very few generation schedules at dams in the region you can work with unless you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
The long term weather forecast is encouraging. A fair chance for rain is predicted each day beginning December 3rd through the 12th. Much of Tennessee is considered to be in a moderate drought by the US Drought Monitor. There are pockets in the Southeast listed as being in a severe drought. Drought conditions to our west are worse.
Temperatures will be mild in early December, if the long term forecast is spot on. Fishing should be fair to good. The normal high temperature here in December is 50 degrees. The normal low is 29 degrees.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
