Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 24 degrees.
Today will be sunny and cool with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, falling to around 30 degrees tonight. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with a high in the middle to upper 50’s and a low in the middle 40’s overnight. Rain will move in tomorrow night, lasting through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 498 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 246 cfs. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. They are receding. Some streams are flowing higher than some anglers prefer. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, stand in safe water to cast. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs or streamers will work best for you.
Fishing for stocked trout may be fair. Go later in the day when hopefully the water will be warmer. Use weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will likely be slow due to the low water temperatures. Some of these rivers are flowing too high to safely wade. Pick safe spots to wade and fish. Try weighted nymphs and streamers.
There are pauses in the generation schedules planned at some dams today, mostly in the afternoon. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
I am busy ordering and receiving fly tying materials and tools. Fly tying season has begun. I will finish processing a large Wapsi order today, while I wait for a huge Firehole order to arrive. Hopefully it is at the post office right now.
Customers have been asking about Eggstasy, a very popular material that was difficult to get earlier this year. Now, it is available in most colors. I ordered quite a bit yesterday, and it should arrive next week.
Jimmy Jones will be tying at the shop Saturday for you. Jimmy is an avid fly tyer and Smokies angler. Some of the patterns I have watched him tie are unique and very effective in the mountains. His fly tying demonstration is FREE. He will be tying between 10 am and 2 pm. All you have to do is show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
