Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 62 degrees.
The high temperature today will be what it is now and fall to the low 30’s tonight. We have a high chance for showers and thunderstorms today. Gusty winds are expected today, especially in the higher elevations. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s overnight.
Rain is in the forecast every day next week beginning Monday. According to the National Weather Service, “There is the potential for several inches of rainfall” and “There is a risk of flooding”.
Little River is flowing at 222 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 208 cfs. The water temperature is 47.1 degrees and rising this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing very close to median flow for this date. The streams warmed somewhat yesterday and last night.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, weighted nymphs or nymph rigs are probably your best option. Also, you can’t rule out the possibility of a blue wing olive hatch or other aquatic insects on the surface.
Fly fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers is fair to good. Nymphs will work best for you but you may want to try streamers too.
I don’t think you will get much action from smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers. The water is still a little chilly. You can try and fishing may be better than I think it will. Try nymphs or streamers.
There are pauses planned in the generation at a few dams today. Check out the generation schedules at Center Hill, Norris and Wilbur Dams. Tailwater anglers have a few choices today, but not many. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
Jimmy Jones will be tying at the shop today between 10 am and 2 pm. This is a free fly tying demonstration. All you have to do is show up. Jimmy is an excellent fly tyer who loves to tie and fish his creations in the Smoky Mountains.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
