Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 34 degrees.
We can expect rain today, especially later, with a high temperature in the low 50’s. Showers are likely tonight. The low temperature will be in the middle 40’s. Tomorrow will be warmer, in the low 60’s dropping to the middle 50’s overnight. Rain is likely with the potential for heavy rain. Rain is likely every day this week through Friday, before clearing on Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 196 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 218 cfs. The water temperature is 46.0 degrees this morning.
Right now, all streams in the mountains are flowing very close to normal. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. We will see the streams warm over the next few days. Fishing will improve unless we get too much rain.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, start with weighted nymph rigs and stick with them unless you see blue wing olives or other aquatic insects on the surface. If you do see surface activity, switch to a dry fly or an emerger. I don’t think that will happen today but it may later this week.
Fly fishing for stocked trout will be fair to today, but improve as the streams warm each day this week. Weighted nymphs or nymph rigs will work best. Stocked trout in some areas have been fished over, caught and released. If your nymphs are not working, downsize to smaller nymphs or midge pupa using light tippets.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will probably be slow today but may improve later this week. Nymphs or streamers will work best for you.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating today at most dams. There are a couple of schedules I saw this morning that indicate pauses later today and there may be more I didn’t see. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the generation schedule at your favorite tailwater.

Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
