Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 59 degrees.
Light steady rain has been falling for two days with a fairly long break yesterday. Rainfall totals during the past 24 hours amounted to one half inch. During the past 48 hours, about one inch has fallen.
We may get another three quarters to an inch of rain today. It will be warm, with a high in the middle 60’s dropping to the middle 50’s tonight. Rain is predicted tomorrow and Friday and it will remain warm through the period. Rainfall may be heavy at times.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 220 cfs. The water temperature is 50.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing above median flow but not blown out so far. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range. Fishing may be good. If you go today, weighted nymphs or nymph rigs will probably work best for you. You might also try streamers. There is a chance you will encounter a blue wing olive or other aquatic insect hatch. Trout may be feeding on the surface during a hatch. There is also a chance for higher and possibly stained water.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers may be good today. If we do get some heavy rain, the rivers may become stained. Trout will be taking nymphs and possibly streamers.
The lowland rivers are warming. Smallmouth bass fishing should improve barring high or stained water, which is possible. Nymphs or streamers are good fly choices.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating or spilling at most dams today with almost no breaks. I didn’t check the schedules at every dam so refer to the TVA website and you might find suitable flows at your favorite tailwater.
We really need this rain. We have been in a moderate drought through much of the Fall this year. The US Drought Monitor will be updated tomorrow and I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
