Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 59 degrees.
We got up to 1.72 inches of rain in Townsend yesterday. Most weather stations in and around the Smokies reported over an inch of rain yesterday.
Rain is predicted today, with the possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon. The high temperature will be in the middle 60’s, dropping to the middle 50’s tonight. More rain is expected tomorrow and it will be warm. The weekend will be drier with only a slight chance for rain both days.
Little River is flowing at 1,090 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.37 feet on the gauge. The river is receding. Median flow for this date is 205 cfs. The water temperature is 50.0 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,290 cfs or 3.86, compared to median flow for this date of 323 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,550 cfs, 3.14 feet, compared to median flow of 376 cfs
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 225 cfs, 3.07 feet, compared to median flow of 81 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 1,050 cfs, 3.15 feet, compared to median flow of 186 cfs.
Davidson River is flowing at 137 cfs, 1.15 feet, compared to median flow of 92 cfs.
As you can see, most streams are flowing very high this morning with Davidson River being an exception. The rivers are receding but more rain is expected today, tonight and tomorrow. This is not a good day to be fishing in the mountains. If you go, stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout will likely be slow today due to high water conditions in the lower elevations. You might try standing on the banks or in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow today in the lowland rivers due to high and possibly stained water. Wading and fishing will not be safe in most of these rivers today.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams. There are planned pauses in the generation at Cherokee Dam. TVA is testing their generators there today. Visit the TVA website to see if you can find other tailwater options I did not see this morning.
We got the rain we needed. We should emerge from the moderate drought we have been in for a while. The US Drought Monitor will be updated this morning, but will not include data from yesterday’s rain.
Jonathan Yeager will be tying at the shop Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. This is a free fly tying demonstration. All you have to do is show up. Jonathan is a professor at UT Chattanooga and a commercial fly tyer.
