Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 56 degrees.
We got a break in the rain yesterday, then it returned. The rainfall total in Townsend amounted to 1.3 inches through midnight. Then, it stopped raining.
It will be overcast today with a high temperature in the low to middle 60’s and a 40% chance for showers. There is a chance for showers tonight with a low in the upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the low 60’s and a low chance for rain. Rain is likely Saturday night with a low in the upper 40’s. Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with a high in the middle 50’s and a chance for more showers.
Little River is flowing at 1,230 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 231 cfs. The water temperature is 50.7 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are flowing high. The streams have begun to recede but they have a long way to go before they will be safe to wade. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, stand in safe water casting heavily weighted nymph rigs or streamers. The chance for rain is fairly low today. Look for small streams that appear to be fishable. Be careful.
Most lowland rivers are flowing very high, too high to safely wade. It might be possible to catch stocked trout on weighted nymph rigs.
TVA and the Corps will be generating much of the day at most dams. I did notice some pauses at Cherokee and Douglas dams. You might be able to fish for a while below Wolf Creek Dam this morning, depending on where you choose to fish. Check the schedules before you go. Visit the TVA website from the links below. I do not check every schedule so there may be a few tailwater fishing options I didn’t see.
Jonathan Yeager will be tying at the shop tomorrow between 10 am and 2 pm. This is a free fly tying demonstration. All you have to do is show up. Though he is a full time professor at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, he also is a commercial fly tyer. You will enjoy watching him tie and talking about his patterns and fly fishing experiences.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
