Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 40 degrees.
It will be sunny today, tomorrow and Sunday. The high temperature today will be in the middle 40’s with a low tonight in the low 30’s. It will be breezy today. Expect a high in the low 40’s tomorrow falling to the middle 20’s overnight. Sunday will be cold with a high in the upper 30’s and a low in the middle 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 657 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 267 cfs. The water temperature is 47.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing much higher than normal. Wading in the rivers will be limited today. Water temperatures are falling quickly. If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs.
This cold front will remain with us through next week and longer. We may see low temperatures in single digits later next week. Water temperatures will plunge. Fishing will be slow.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers may be fair today or it could be slow. Streams are flowing high. Water temperatures are falling. Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams though there are breaks planned this afternoon at others. Check the schedules at Wolf Creek, Norris and Cherokee dams. Maybe you can work with those, at least for a while.
This is not a positive fishing report but there is some good news. The US Drought Monitor was updated yesterday. Some areas in our region emerged from drought status, including East Tennessee. We will be open until 6:00 pm tonight and tomorrow night as usual. We close at 5:00 pm Sunday through Thursday. We are always open at 9:00 am.
