Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:30 am, the temperature is 33 degrees.
It will be partly sunny early and sunny later today with a high temperature in the upper 30’s. Tonight will be clear with a low in the low 20’s. Tomorrow will be warmer with a high in the middle 40’s and a low around 30 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 373 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.44 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 266 cfs. The water temperature is 42.1 degrees this morning and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range and they are still falling. I think the water temperatures will continue to fall today.
Fishing for wild trout in the Smokies will be slow. If you go, stand in safe water and dredge a weighted nymph or tandem nymph rig.
Fishing for stocked trout will likely be slow, though stockers can be caught when the water is cold. Try weighted nymphs or rigs.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is slow.
TVA and the Corps will be generating today at most dams. I did notice a break in the generation at Wolf Creek Dam this afternoon. Check that out. There may be other tailwater fishing options I didn’t see this morning. Visit the TVA website.
If you go fishing today, my advice is to have a warm and dry change of clothes in your vehicle and stay close, in case you fall in or get wet.
Swift water search and rescue teams have been looking for a man who disappeared in Little River near The Sinks while kayaking. The man was reported missing Friday and they were still searching yesterday. High water is complicating the search. Teams from Blount County and the Townsend Fire Department are involved in the search.
Later this week, frigid air will move into the Smokies. The high temperature Friday is predicted to be 18 degrees with a low of around 7 degrees. Saturday will be cold, with a high in the low to middle 20’s and a low of around 12 degrees. The high temperature Christmas Day will be in the low 30’s with a low in the middle teens. It may snow Friday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
