Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
It will be cloudy today with a slight chance for showers. The high temperature will be in the middle 40’s, dropping to the upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the upper 30’s. Rain is likely tomorrow night.
Rain is likely Thursday with a high in the low 50’s. Much colder air will move in Thursday night. Expect a low temperature in the upper teens. Rain will change to snow.
Snow is likely Friday, with a high temperature in the upper teens. The snow will end by evening. Now, the expected low Friday night is expected to be 4 degrees. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and cold with highs in the 20’s. Lows at night are predicted to be 8 degrees Saturday night and 12 degrees Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 253 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.17 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 228 cfs. The water temperature is 39.7 degrees this morning and remaining steady.
Streams in the mountains are flowing near normal for this date. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. We will see some warming today through Thursday. Fishing may improve some through the period.
Then, the extreme cold temperatures will arrive Thursday night and water temperatures will plunge. Fishing will be very slow Friday and through the weekend.
If you go today, weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Fishing for stocked trout may improve if the water warms today through Thursday like I think it will. Weighted nymphs are good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will likely be slow today.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams today. I did see a break this afternoon at Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. I normally just check predicted flows at the most popular tailwaters so visit the TVA website yourself. You may find favorable flows on your favorite tailwater.
Officials in the Smokies announced they found the body of a 61 year old Knoxville man who drowned in Little River while kayaking above the sinks. The body was found near where the man was last seen before the accident Friday afternoon. Rescue teams searched for the man this weekend when the water was much higher and dangerous for those involved.
We are busy at the shop. We have had a great December so far. We’ll see what happens later this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
