Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 29 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 60’s, falling to the upper 40’s tonight. Showers are likely tonight. We can expect rain and possibly thunderstorms tomorrow with a high around 60 degrees and a low in the low 40’s overnight. New Year’s Day will be sunny with a high in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 139 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.79 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs. The water temperature is 35.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal at this point in the year. Water temperatures are still cold, well below the trout’s preferred range. Until the water warms further, trout will be sluggish and fishing will be slow. The steams will continue to gradually warm today and through the weekend. The fairly warm rain should raise water temperatures.
Fishing will improve through the weekend.
A strong storm may bring heavy rain early next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. It will be warm and windy. Two to four inches of rain is possible according to the National Weather Service.
If you go fishing today, weighted nymphs will work best for you.
Fishing for stocked trout will be slow until the water warms. Fishing for these trout will improve through the weekend. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams, with breaks planned at others mostly during the afternoon. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater options you have today.
The shop will be open today and tomorrow between 9:00 am and 6 pm. We will be closed on New Year’s Day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
