Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 70 degrees.
It is breezy this morning. Showers are likely today with possible thunderstorms later this afternoon. The high temperature today will be in the low 70’s, falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Rain will continue overnight. Thunderstorms are also possible. More rain is predicted tomorrow with a high in the upper 60’s and a low in the upper 30’s overnight.
Rainfall is predicted to be between three quarters of an inch to one and one half inches over the next two days.
January is starting out with near record warm temperatures. The average high temperature in January is 47 degrees, with the average low being 27 degrees. The long term weather forecast indicates we will be much warmer than that through the middle of the month.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 365 cfs. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees at the USGS gauge site near Townsend.
At least for now, streams in the Smokies are flowing below normal for this date. Water temperatures are rising and may rise further today due to the warm air and rain. This may be a good fishing day in the mountains, though it may be windy. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Weighted nymph rigs and possibly streamers are good fly choices. Be on the lookout for a hatch of blue wing olives or other aquatic insects.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers has improved. Again, this may be a good fishing day for stocked trout. Weighted nymphs are a good choice. Streamers may work for you as well.
Pauses in the generation are planned at several dams in the area offering tailwater angling opportunities. Check the schedules at Center Hill, Cherokee, Douglas, Dale Hollow, South Holston and Chatuge dams. There may be others. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Our first free fly tying demonstration in 2023 will be held Sunday January 8th between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Rob has been a good friend or ours for many years. His fly tying demonstration is free. All you have to do is show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
