Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:21 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
This is going to be a wet and breezy day, with a high temperature in the middle 50’s and a low tonight in the middle 30’s. Rainfall totals between a half to three quarters of an inch are possible today. Showers are likely tonight mainly before 10:00 pm. We will begin drying out Monday, with a high in the upper 40’s and a low around 30 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 317 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 316 cfs. The water temperature is 45.0 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing right at normal for this date. We will probably see water levels rise later today, depending on how much rain we get and where. Water temperatures are somewhat chilly.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs and nymph rigs are good choices. You might try streamers. Hatches of blue wing olives and other aquatic insects are a possibility.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lower elevation rivers will be fair today, or maybe better. Weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs are probably your best options. You may want to try smaller nymphs and midge pupa imitations. Get your flies down to where the stocked trout are holding. This is a good time to be “high sticking” or Euro nymphing, so you can vary the depth of your flies, without being hampered by strike indicators.
There are pauses in the generation planned today at several dams in the region. Tailwater anglers have some choices today. Check the predicted flows on the TVA website, at your favorite tailwater. You may be pleasantly surprised.
If you enjoy tying flies or you are just now learning, come by the shop this afternoon to watch Rob Fightmaster conduct a Free Fly Tying Demonstration. He will be tying between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
Rob and I have been friends for a long time. You will enjoy meeting him. He is a professional fly fishing guide, who specializes in the Great Smoky Mountains. I think he has been guiding in the Smokies for about 20 years, full time. He is also an excellent fly fishing instructor.
You don’t need a reservation to attend. His demonstration is free. Just show up at the shop. Watch him tie flies and listen to what he has to say. Ask questions. You will learn a lot from Rob.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
