Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:55 am, the temperature is 22 degrees.
According to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Roads Twitter Page CLICK HERE, some roads re-opened yesterday but others remain closed. Little River Road from Townsend to Metcalf Bottoms is still closed. Newfound Gap Road from Cherokee to Gatlinburg is closed.
Today will be sunny and warmer with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, falling to the high 20’s overnight. Tomorrow will be sunny with clouds increasing later and a high in the middle 50’s. Rain is likely Monday night and Tuesday. The high temperature Tuesday will be in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 769 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.00 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 288 cfs. The water temperature is 39.7 degrees and falling.
Streams in the mountains have receded but most are still flowing higher than normal. The water is swift in some streams or areas of streams. Be careful wading.
Water temperatures are plunging way below the trout’s preferred range. Fishing will likely be slow.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, wait until later when the water is warmer. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers will be slow due to higher than normal water and cold water conditions. Go later when the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs might work. You may need to downsize your flies and use light tippet. Get your flies down to where you see trout holding.
There are pauses in the generation scheduled at several dams today, some in the morning and others later this afternoon. Tailwater anglers may be able to work with some of these generation schedules. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have today.
Will Davis will be conducting a free fly tying demonstration at the shop this afternoon from 1 pm until 3 pm. Many of you have met Will. He worked with me at the shop for about a year before starting college. He has vast fly tying knowledge and skills. I would say his specialty is Euro Nymphing and competition. He has demonstrated at fly fishing shows, including the Atlanta Fly Fishing Show.
You will learn a lot from Will. This demonstration is FREE. All you have to do is show up at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
