Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
Rain moved into the area after midnight. So far, rainfall totals have amounted to .48 inches in Townsend.
It will continue to rain this morning before ending around noon. It may be windy today. The high temperature today will be around 60 degrees, dropping to the middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the low 50’s overnight. Rain will return tomorrow night and last through Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 512 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 255 cfs. The river is slowly rising. The water temperature is 43.9 degrees and steady this morning.
Most stream in the mountains are flowing higher than normal for this date. Some streams have begun to rise. Water temperatures have warmed and that trend will continue over the next few days.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, you will likely encounter rising and possibly stained water. Fairly heavy rain is falling at our house right now. Water temperatures may rise but keep in mind, there is snow in the mountains that will melt so we may see temperatures fall at some point or rise slowly.
Stand in safe water if you go fishing today, casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation streams will improve over the next couple of days, unless heavy rain raises the water levels too much.
It is hard to predict the fishing conditions today through the end of the week as there are multiple weather systems expected, with heavy rain possible.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at most dams with some exceptions. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will have much warmer than normal temperatures for three days, before becoming cooler Thursday night and through the weekend.
Temperatures may fall to about normal after the 24th and through the end of January. The normal average high temperature in January is 47 degrees and the average normal low is 27 degrees.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
