Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
Yesterday, beginning after midnight, .84 inches of rain fell in Townsend.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 60’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. It will be windy tonight with a chance for more rain. Rain and wind are likely tomorrow. The high temperature will be in the middle 60’s, falling into the low to middle 30’s overnight. Friday will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle to upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 1,160 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.48 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 281 cfs. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Some are flowing very high, including Little River and Little Pigeon River. Other streams, especially in Western North Carolina were not affected as much by the rain. Davidson River is flowing much closer to normal than other streams.
Water temperatures are rising and that trend will continue today and tomorrow.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, be careful wading. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs and streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations is improving though water levels are high in some streams. Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best for you.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at many dams. There are some exceptions, with pauses planned at Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. If you hope to fish on a tailwater today, visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Beginning March 1, 2023, you will need to purchase a parking tag if you plan to park anywhere in Great Smoky Mountains National Park for more than 15 minutes. You can buy an annual tag now for $40. Daily tags will cost $5. Weekly tags will sell for $15.
You can read more about this new parking tag system on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
You can purchase annual tags now at Visitors Centers or on the Great Smoky Mountains Association website by CLICKING HERE.
I think the tags can be purchased at the Townsend Visitors Center but I’m not sure. The store in the Visitors Center is operated by the Great Smoky Mountains Association.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
