Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 67 degrees.
It did not rain overnight, but the wind is blowing strong right now at our home. In fact, we are under a Wind Advisory until 7:00 pm this evening.
Rain will begin falling soon and last until early afternoon. The high temperature today will be what it is now. Rainfall amounts between a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch are possible today. Winds will be out of the southwest at 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts as high as 40 miles per hour. Tonight will be clear with a low temperature in the low 30’s.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 40’s and a low in the upper 20’s. Saturday will be sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s. Showers are predicted Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 1,030 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.31 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 286 cfs. The water temperature is 50.36 degrees.
All streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Some are flowing quite a bit higher. Most are stable right now though some are rising. With more rain predicted today, we may see the streams rise.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations, within the trout’s preferred range.
This is certainly not an ideal day to be fishing in the Smokies due to the Wind Advisory and higher than normal water.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, nymph rigs or streamers.
Some lowland rivers are flowing near normal for now. Others are flowing much higher. Water temperatures are good. Fishing for stocked trout may be fair or better depending on where you are fishing. Wind will likely be an issue for you.
There are pauses in the generation planned at some dams today, including Norris, Wilbur, Dale Hollow, Chatuge and South Holston. Tailwater anglers may be able to work with some of these schedules. Check the TVA website to view the generation schedules and plan accordingly.
We will be holding two Free Fly Tying Demonstrations this weekend.
Michael (Tic) Smith will be demonstrating Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. I have known Tic for many years. Tic is a tailwater trout fishing guide who can be booked through Southeastern Anglers. You can view their website by CLICKING HERE. He specializes in floating clients on the Hiwassee River and the Cumberland River in Kentucky, as well as other tailwaters in Tennessee. Tic is an excellent guide and fly tyer and a great guy to spend your time with Saturday.
Kendall Mayers will be tying Sunday from 1 pm until 3 pm. Kendall is a professional guide who works with Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain. I see Kendall in the shop almost every week, in the fly tying department. He will be tying sculpin fly patterns he uses for big trout in the Smokies and other areas.
These fly tying demonstrations are Free. You don’t need a reservation. Just show up at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
