Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
Light to heavy rain fell in the area yesterday. Townsend got .53 inches, while in other areas nearby the rain totals amounted to only .10 inches.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 40’s falling to the middle 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s. Rain will return Saturday and continue through Sunday. Sunday’s high temperature will be in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 893 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.15 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. The water temperature is 48.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal, with some flowing considerably higher. If you go fishing in the mountains today, be careful wading. The water is swift in many rivers and streams. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or streamers.
You will find higher than normal water flows in most lowland rivers where trout are stocked. Water temperatures are not too cold in these rivers so fishing may be fair or better. Weighted nymphs will probably work best though streamers may produce for you as well.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many of their dams. I did see pauses planned at a couple of dams and there may be more I didn’t see this morning. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Jack and I spent yesterday working on more display space in the fly tying department. We finished the job and added 36 more square feet on the walls. Now I’ve got a lot of re-arranging to do.
Guide Michael “Tic” Smith will be conducting a free fly tying demonstration at the shop tomorrow from 10 am until 2 pm. You will really like Tic. I’ve known him for many years. He has developed a lot of flies that target trout on our area tailwaters, including Hiwassee, the Cumberland River in Kentucky and others. I’ve seen a lot of photos of his clients holding huge brown trout.
Kendall Mayers will be demonstrating his fly tying skills Sunday, from 1 pm until 3 pm. Kendall is a fly fishing guide at Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain. I really like Kendall. I see him in the shop almost every week buying fly tying materials.
These fly tying demonstrations are free. You don’t need a reservation. Just show up at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
