Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 27 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s falling to the upper 30’s tonight. Rain will move in tonight and remain through Sunday night. The high temperature Sunday will be around 50 degrees dropping to the low 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 611 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.81 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 296 cfs. The water temperature is 43.5 degrees this morning and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Davidson River is flowing right at normal. Water temperatures are falling and are below the trout’s preferred range.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, you will likely encounter higher than normal flows. Some streams or areas in streams will be swift. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, nymph rigs or streamers. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Go later in the day when the water is warmer.
Fishing in the low elevation streams that are stocked with trout will be slow to fair due to the higher than normal flows and cold water conditions. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs. You might catch some trout.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams, with short to long pauses at others. When I flipped through the list of dams I noticed breaks in the generation at Center Hill, Norris, Wolf Creek and Dale Hollow dams. Check the schedules yourself to determine if you can work with these schedules and fish on the tailwaters below.
