Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:33 am, the temperature is 38 degrees.
Light rain is falling in Townsend this morning. Rain will continue through the morning hours and possibly this afternoon. Less than one tenth of an inch is predicted. The high temperature today will be around 50 degrees. Rain is expected tonight, with a low temperature around 30 degrees. Rain will change to snow in the higher elevations. It may be breezy today.
There is a chance for rain or snow early tomorrow morning, changing to all rain in the low elevations with snow expected in the mountains. The high elevations are under a Winter Storm Watch tonight through tomorrow. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the upper 30’s dropping to the low 20’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 486 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs. The water temperature is 44.2 degrees and steady.
Streams in the mountains are still flowing higher than normal though they have receded considerably over the past few days. Water temperatures remain below the trout’s preferred range at all elevations.
You might catch trout in the mountains today though the streams are swift and water temperatures are low. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, tandem nymph rigs or streamers. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be a little better today. Try weighted nymphs or small streamers. The rivers are flowing high so be careful wading.
TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at many dams. There are some exceptions. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
We were busy at the shop yesterday. Guide Tic Smith was conducting a free fly tying demonstration and a lot of people showed up to watch and talk to him. I always learn about new fly tying materials and tools I should be stocking when I talk to Tic. He stays on top of everything. When he is talking, I am taking notes.
We will be offering another free fly tying demonstration this afternoon from 1 pm until 3 pm. The featured fly tyer is Kendall Mayers. Kendall is a professional fly fishing guide at Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain. You will like Kendall. All of us in the shop do. He and other guides at Blackberry are regulars at the shop, and I talk to them frequently in the fly tying department. They are a fun bunch of guys. They are all avid fly tyers.
Kendall’s fly tying demonstration is free. All you have to do is show up.
I am rearranging the fly tying department. Jack Gregory and I added 36 square feet of new wall display space Thursday. I will bring in some new Mustad hooks called the Heritage Series. Also, I will be adding some Daiichi hooks to our offering. You will see them in a few weeks.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
