Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 38 degrees.
There is a slight chance for rain or snow showers this morning. It will be cloudy today with a high temperature around 35 degrees, dropping to the low to middle 20’s tonight. It will be breezy today. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the middle to upper 30’s overnight.
Rain will move into the area tomorrow night and continue through Wednesday.
Highway 441 from Gatlinburg to Cherokee is temporarily closed due to snow and ice. The high elevations in the Smokies are under a Winter Weather Advisory today.
Little River is flowing at 546 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.72 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 292 cfs. The river is currently rising. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees this morning at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the mountains are flowing above normal and some are slowly rising. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. The water will not likely warm today.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, tandem nymph rigs or streamers.
Many lowland rivers where trout are stocked are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are chilly, and below the trout’s preferred range. You may catch stocked trout on weighted nymphs or small streamers.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many dams. There are planned pauses at a handful of dams later this morning or this afternoon. Refer to the TVA website from the link below to see what is planned on your favorite tailwater. Maybe you can squeeze in some tailwater fishing time today.
Like I do every Monday, I will be ordering fly tying materials and tools that were sold during the past week or so, from several suppliers. Of course, we will be open today from 9 am until 5 pm. January has been a good month at the shop so far, better than last year.
