Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 24 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warmer with a high temperature in the low 50’s, falling to the middle 30’s tonight. Showers will move into the area early tomorrow morning and continue through the day. The high temperature will be in the low 60’s with a low in the low 30’s overnight. It will be windy tomorrow with 25 to 30 mph wind gusting as high as 50 mph.
Little River is flowing at 384 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.46 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 318 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees and falling this morning.
Steams in the mountains have receded and are now close to normal for this date. Some streams are still flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range and falling.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Go later in the day when hopefully the water will be warmer. Weighted nymphs, tandem nymph rigs or streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing for stocked trout will likely be slow to fair due to the cold water temperatures. When the water temperatures bottom out and begin to warm later today, fishing may improve. Weighted nymph rigs or small streamers may work for you.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day with a few exceptions. I noticed pauses at Wilbur, Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. There may be more tailwater opportunities so check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwaters today.
We will be holding free fly tying demonstrations at the shop Saturday and Sunday.
Hunter Palmer will be tying Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. Hunter is a professional guide from Gatlinburg who takes his clients fishing in the Smoky Mountains and nearby rivers.
Steve Gregg will be demonstrating Sunday between 1 pm and 3 pm. Steve is a fly tying instructor working at the Orvis store in Sevierville. He will be tying his favorite flies used in the mountains and tailwaters.
You do not need an appointment to attend these free demonstrations. Just show up at the shop and learn from these guys.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
