Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 38 degrees.
We have a slight chance for rain and snow showers today with a high temperature around 40 degrees, dropping to the low 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low to middle 40’s and a low in the upper 20’s overnight. Saturday will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the 50’s and a low in the 30’s. Rain will return Sunday and it will remain warm.
Little River is flowing at 833 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 361 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees this morning.
Rain early yesterday affected the stream levels. Most if not all streams in the Smokies rose quickly. They have been receding but they are flowing quite a bit higher than normal.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers may be fair today. Some rivers are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or small streamers.
If you hope to fish on a tailwater today, you may find some generation schedules you can work with. Check the schedules at Norris, Wilbur, Wolf Creek Dale Hollow and Chatuge dams. There may be others.
It was windy yesterday. I drove to the shop early. It was raining and still dark. I was driving slow, probably 30 miles per hour. Not far from our home, a tree fell on the road right in front of me. I swerved to miss the tree but a large branch hit the windshield post. I could hear it hitting the truck on the passenger side. When the sun came up, I checked the truck and saw no damage. I guess it could have been worse. If I had been driving faster, the tree would have fallen behind me and I probably would not have known.
We will be holding free fly tying demonstrations at the shop Saturday and Sunday.
Hunter Palmer will be tying Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. Hunter is a professional guide from Gatlinburg who takes his clients fishing in the Smoky Mountains and nearby rivers.
Steve Gregg will be demonstrating Sunday between 1 pm and 3 pm. Steve is a fly tying instructor working at the Orvis store in Sevierville. He will be tying his favorite flies used in the mountains and tailwaters.
You do not need an appointment to attend these free demonstrations. Just show up at the shop and learn from these guys.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
