Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:4 am, the temperature is 31 degrees.
This is going to be a beautiful day. It will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 50’s, dropping to the middle 30’s tonight. It is going to rain Sunday and we could get up to a quarter of an inch. The high temperature will be in the low 50’s. Rain is likely Sunday night with a low in the low 40’s. Monday will be warm with a slight chance for rain.
Little River is flowing at 492 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 304 cfs. The water temperature is 40.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Some streams are swift. Care should be taken when wading. Water temperatures are cold this morning. We will see the streams warming today and over the next few days. I would wait a while before going fishing today to give the water time to begin warming. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs are good choices. Streamers may work for you as well.
The lowland rivers where trout are stocked are flowing fairly high. Fishing will improve as the streams warm. Fishing will likely be best later today. Nymphs, tandem nymph rigs or streamers are good fly choices.
There are pauses in the generation scheduled today at several dams, offering tailwater anglers some options. Most of the pauses I saw this morning will occur later today. Check the predicted flows at your favorite tailwaters by visiting the TVA website from the links below. With careful planning you might be able to fish on some of these rivers today.
We are bringing back our beginner fly tying classes. The first one will be held Saturday February 18th starting at 9:00 am. Tools and materials will be furnished for you.
