Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:29 am, the temperature is 40 degrees.
It is going to rain today but it will be warm with a high in the low 50’s. Rain will continue to fall overnight with a low in the low to middle 40’s. The chance for rain Monday will be lower. The high temperature will be in the upper 50’s with a low in the low 40’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 407 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 302 cfs. The water temperature is 42.6 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Most streams in the Smokies have receded but they are still flowing somewhat higher than normal for this date. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range.
We should see some warming of the water today and through the week. We may also see higher water through the week as rain is predicted every day through Friday. Depending on how much rain we get, some streams may rise today.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, weighted nymphs or tandem nymph rigs are good choices. Streamers may work too. We have plenty of water and some streams or areas in streams are swift. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Be careful wading.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers may be fair. Weighted nymphs or nymph rigs will probably work best. Small streamers may produce as well.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are planning to generate all day at most dams. There are short pauses scheduled at a few, so check the TVA website before heading out for a day of fly fishing on the tailwaters.
We are bringing back our beginner fly tying classes. The first one will be held Saturday February 18th starting at 9:00 am. Tools and materials will be furnished for you. The class is limited to 4 students. It will be taught by Brian Courtney, who has been teaching this class for many years. The cost of the class is $100. It will last all day.
