Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:59 am, the temperature is 44 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature around 60 degrees with a low tonight in the low 40’s. Showers are likely tomorrow and tomorrow night. The high temperature will be in the low 60’s with a low in the middle 40’s overnight. Friday will be mostly cloudy with showers in the morning. The high will be in the low 60’s with a low in the low 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 426 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 371 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains have receded to slightly above normal or in some cases, at normal for this date. Water temperatures are falling this morning, though they are still within the trout’s preferred range in the low elevations.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer and trout are actively feeding. You may want to wait a while until the water begins to warm. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best, at least early today. You may encounter sporadic hatches of aquatic insects so be prepared to switch to dry flies and emergers. You may see blue quill, quill gordon, caddis or stoneflies on the water at times.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers should be good today. Sub-surface fly patterns will likely work best. Weighted nymphs, midge pupa, egg patterns, squirmy worms or small streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers may be fair. Go later when the water is warmer. Nymphs and streamers are good fly choices.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating or sluicing, or both at every dam I checked this morning. They are attempting to lower the lakes to provide water storage capacity. Visit the TVA website to see if there is a tailwater opportunity I missed.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
