Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 33 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 60’s, falling to the middle 40’s tonight. Rain is likely tonight. Showers are likely tomorrow morning before gradually clearing with a high in the upper 50’s and a low in the low 30’s overnight. Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 50’s and a low around 40 degrees.
Sunday is going to be cool and wet. One weather service is predicting about an inch of rainfall through the day and overnight.
Little River is flowing at 362 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.44 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 374 cfs. The water temperature is 47.8 degrees this morning and falling.
Most streams in the mountains have receded to about normal. Water temperatures are falling.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, wait a while for the falling water temperatures to bottom out and begin to warm. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs will probably work best, especially early today. Be on the lookout for aquatic insect hatches with trout feeding on the surface. If you see that, switch to dry flies and emergers.
Fishing for stocked trout will be best when the rivers begin to warm later today. Sub-surface flies will likely work best for you. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, and maybe midge pupa. Streamers may work too. Try small Wooly Buggers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers may be slow today due to the colder water conditions. Fishing could improve later when the water begins to warm. Nymphs or streamers will work best.
TVA and the Corps will be pushing water through most dams today by generating, sluicing or both in an attempt to lower the lake levels. I did notice a break in the generation at Chatuge Dam. There may be others so check the TVA website to see if there are tailwater fishing options for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
