Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 31 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low to middle 50’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. Showers will move in tonight with new precipitation amounts between a quarter and a half of an inch. Tomorrow’s high temperature will be in the middle to upper 50’s, dropping to the upper 30’s overnight. Expect rain tomorrow with precipitation amounting to between a quarter and half of an inch.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 360 cfs. The water temperature is 48.4 degrees this morning and falling.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are chilly, even in the low elevations. And, the water temperatures are falling right now.
Fishing should be fair today, especially later when hopefully the water is warmer. That depends on how cold the water becomes before beginning to warm.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait a while to give the streams a chance to warm. Weighted nymphs and tandem nymph rigs will likely work best for you today. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lower elevations may be fair and hopefully good. Sub-surface flies will likely work best. Try weighted nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms or small streamers. If trout are not taking the larger flies, try midge pupa patterns on light tippet.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will probably be slow today due to the chilly water temperatures. You could try. If you do, use nymphs or streamers.
Fly fishing success for most species is water temperature driven. At this point in the morning, it is impossible to judge just how cold the streams will be before daybreak and later this morning.
There are some generation schedules you may be able to work with today on the tailwaters. Check the scheduled flows at Center Hill, Wilbur, Dale Hollow, South Holston and Chatuge dams. Hopefully you can go fishing on a tailwater today.
