Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:59 am, the temperature is 40 degrees.
Colder air has moved into the Smoky Mountains. Today will be cloudy with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, dropping to the middle 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be clearing with a high in the middle 40’s and a low in the low 20’s. Wednesday will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low to middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 420 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 350 cfs. The water temperature is 48.6 degrees and falling.
Rainfall yesterday affected the stream levels. Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal but they are receding. Water temperatures are falling.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait a while before going to allow the steams to warm somewhat. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. The temperatures may not rise much today after they bottom out later. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or nymph rigs.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be fair today. Trout will most likely be taking sub-surface flies. Try nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms, midge pupa or small streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will probably be slow today due to the cool water temperatures. If you go, try nymphs or streamers.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating and in some cases sluicing at most dams today. You may be able to work with a couple of the schedules, including South Holston and Chatuge dams. Check the TVA website yourself to see if you can find suitable flows for tailwater angling.
We enjoyed a wet but very warm early Spring this year. What we will see this week is weather that is more Winter-like. Except for Thursday, low temperatures will be in the 20’s and 30’s. Water temperatures will fall and fishing will slow through the weekend. Warmer temperatures will return later next week according to the long term forecast, which is subject to change.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
