Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 57 degrees.
It is raining this morning and that will continue all day and into the evening. We may get a quarter to a half inch. It will be breezy today with winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour. Today’s high temperature will be in the low 60’s, dropping to the upper 20’s tonight.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 40’s and a low around 20 degrees overnight. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the low 40’s and a low in the low 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 287 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.29 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 393 cfs. The water temperature is 46.9 degrees and steady.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or lower than normal this morning. Water temperatures are fairly chilly but remaining fairly steady. We may see water temperatures rise today due to the warm rain falling in the region. If that happens, fishing will improve.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, be aware that some or all streams may rise at some point. Trout may be actively feeding. Nymphs or weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations will be fair to good today, depending on how warm the rivers become. Nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms or small streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers may be slow. If you go, use nymphs or streamers.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams today. They are sluicing and even spilling at some. Check the flows at Wilbur, South Holston and Chatuge dams. If you are familiar with fishing in these tailwaters, you may decide to go.
If you are planning a fishing trip to the Smokies this weekend expect cold water temperatures. Trout will likely be sluggish.
A warming trend is coming next week beginning Wednesday. Fishing will improve.
We are busy at the shop and we are well stocked. This year has been very good so far, compared to last year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
