Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:28 am, the temperature is 26 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature barely reaching 40 degrees with a low tonight in the upper teens. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s and a low overnight in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 396 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.5 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 385 cfs. The water temperature is 43.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains have receded back to normal which is fairly high this time of the year. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range and cooling further this morning. Though it will be sunny today, it will be cold. Water temperatures probably will not rise much today and cool further tonight.
Wild trout in the mountains will be lethargic. If you go, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs or nymph rigs will be your best options. You may catch trout, but don’t expect significant activity.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers might be fair. Stocked trout tend to be less affected by cold water temperatures. Sub-surface flies will work best. Try weighted nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms, midge pupa and possibly streamers.
Generation will be paused at several area dams, offering tailwater anglers some fishing opportunities today. The times vary, with some pauses in the morning and others occurring in the afternoon. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with some of these generation schedules.
It looks like this blast of cold air may be the last during the Winter/Spring transition. After a cold Monday night, warm air will move into the region next week and remain through early April.
We were very busy at the shop yesterday. Some customers were fishing but most were buying gear, preparing for better fishing to come soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
