Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 67 degrees.
Today will be sunny and breezy with a high temperature near 80 degrees. It will be warm and breezy tonight with a low temperature in the upper 50’s. Rain will move in tonight.
Showers are likely tomorrow. Thunderstorms are possible. It will be breezy. The high temperature will be in the middle 70’s dropping to the high 40’s overnight.
Sunday will be sunny and breezy with a high in the middle 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 253 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.22 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 381 cfs. The water temperature is 53.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or below normal with Tellico River being an exception, flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are well with the trout’s preferred range, in the low to middle elevations.
Fishing in the Smokies will be good today. You will certainly catch trout on weighted nymphs or rigs. Trout may also be taking dry flies and emergers. Fishing conditions tomorrow will depend on how much rainfall we get in the mountains. If we don’t get too much rain, fishing will be good this weekend, though it may be windy.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is good. Trout feeding activity is being driven by warm water temperatures. Sub-surface flies will probably work best for you, though don’t rule out dry flies. These trout are heavily populated in the stocked areas and they are hungry. Try weighted nymphs, caddis pupa, midge pupa, egg patterns, squirmy worms or streamers. You might try a dry and dropper rig to see what happens.
Smallmouth bass fishing in the lowland rivers is improving due to the warmer water conditions. We will see water temperatures rise further today. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best. I would also try foam floating flies or poppers to see if the fish are interested.
There are pauses in the generation schedules planned at several TVA and Corps dams today, offering tailwater anglers some options. Visit the TVA website from the links below. With careful planning, you may work with some of these schedules whether you are boating or wading.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
