Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:33 am, the temperature is 46 degrees.
Today will be sunny and beautiful with a high temperature in the middle 70’s dropping to the low 50’s tonight. We do have a chance for thunderstorms tonight. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 364 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.47 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 347 cfs.
Heavy rain fell in areas of the Smokies yesterday amounting to between .60 inches to 1.34 inches. Most streams in the mountains rose quickly and many were temporarily stained.
Some streams have receded to about normal, including Little River.
Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville gauge is still flowing high at 1,070 cfs, compared to median flow of 633 cfs for this date. Tellico River is flowing at 778 cfs, compared to median flow of 339 cfs.
Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low to middle elevations. Trout are actively feeding. Aquatic insects are active. Fishing is good, though some streams are flowing higher than anglers prefer.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, be ready for anything. Nymphs or weighted nymph rigs are good choices. You may see trout rising to adult insects or emergers. Be ready for that.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is good due to the warm water conditions. We have plenty of water in the rivers so wading in some may be limited. Sub-surface flies will likely work best for you.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is improving as the water temperatures rise. Some rivers are flowing high. Wading may be limited. If you go, try weighted nymphs or streamers.
TVA and the Corps are planning long breaks in the generation schedules at many dams. Tailwater anglers have a lot of options today, whether you are wading or boating. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Winds will be calm today so you might want to launch your boat and fish on one of the many lakes in our area.
This is going to be a nice fly fishing day with many opportunities for you. The shop will be open of course, between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
